The era of cultivating diamonds is coming, how long can the natural diamond industry survive?

According to the US news media CNBC, he had earlier taken a cultivated diamond ring to a diamond store in New York for testing. Although these jewelers can accurately name the clarity and color of the diamond, none of them can indicate that it is a cultivated diamond. It can be seen that the manufacturing technology of cultivated diamonds has been very mature, and there is no difference with natural diamonds, which can not be distinguished by the naked eye.
According to the US news media CNBC, he had earlier taken a cultivated diamond ring to a diamond store in New York for testing. It can be seen that the manufacturing technology of cultivated diamonds has been very mature, and there is no difference with natural diamonds, which can not be distinguished by the naked eye.
These cultivated diamonds can never be distinguished from natural diamonds by the naked eye, because they are indeed composed of carbon atoms in a specific structure like diamonds, and are not fake diamonds such as Soviet diamonds, moissanite or crystals. A team of researchers at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom recently said that in just a few days, they can "grow" a one-carat diamond in the laboratory, which can be polished and cut out 20 or 30 percent of the fine naked diamond, which looks no different from diamonds that have lain deep in the earth for millions of years.
Growing diamonds by vapor deposition means that there are only four steps to growing a large diamond: First, a thin diamond crystal "seed" is placed in a vacuum to remove impurities. Scientists then pump in methane and hydrogen gas at temperatures of thousands of degrees Celsius, creating a highly charged plasma. The plasma quickly disintegrates, releasing carbon atoms. These carbon ions mimic the diamond's regular octahedral structure, then attach to the surface of the "seed" and grow wildly at a rate of 0.006 millimeters per hour. Then, after a few days, it can be cut and polished to form a diamond with the same structure as a natural diamond.
Did you find it amazing when you read it? This is the much-discussed CVD grown diamond! Due to the rarity and high value of natural diamonds, it is not surprising that someone would seek ways to replicate beauty. In recent years, lab-made diamonds have become more common, more advanced, and more difficult to detect.
Cultivated diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, optical and physical properties as natural diamonds. Most cultivated diamonds are classified as high temperature and high pressure (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamonds depending on their production method. Since HPHT and CVD diamonds are almost identical to natural diamonds, the differences only become clear when analyzed in a professional gemstone laboratory.
Simple comparison of CVD and HPHT diamonds. In the jewelry industry, because of the cost and quality control, CVD is mainly used to produce large artificial diamonds, and the cost of CVD method to produce small particles of cultivated diamonds is very high. HPHT is used to produce both small and large synthetic diamonds. At present, most of the artificial diamonds manufactured in China belong to the HPHT method, while European and American companies mainly adopt the CVD method. The yield of CVD synthetic diamonds used for jewelry is only about 10 to 15%, and the yield of HPHT synthetic diamonds is even lower.
In the middle of the last century, HPHT's artificial diamonds have begun to enter the stage of mass production, but at this stage, artificial diamonds are mostly powdered for industrial use. The production rate of CVD synthetic diamonds is still very slow, so it is gradually forgotten. In 1981, Russian scientists first discovered that hydrogen atoms play a key role in making CVD diamonds. Soon after, the team at the National Institute of Inorganic Materials in Japan made a breakthrough in the rate of CVD diamond production, and countries returned to this field of research and developed a variety of different chemical vapor deposition techniques. Until 2012, the international jewelry market began to appear a small number of colorless CVD artificial diamonds, and it was valued by jewelers.
Artificial diamonds, which sound rare, are actually the news of the last century. In the 1950s, scientists developed the technology to synthesize diamonds, but at that time, the technology to remove impurities was still crude, and most of the diamonds created were for industrial use. Until recently, cultivated diamonds have been put into the commercial world and can be displayed in the window alongside mined diamonds, and the process of synthetic diamonds from mass production to jewelry grade has taken nearly 70 years. Will some people still say that the technical requirements of growing diamonds are not high, and that machines can simply produce them?
Will breeding diamonds have an impact on natural diamonds?
The jewellery industry has been debating for some time whether growing diamonds will disrupt the diamond market. The diamonds grown in the laboratory are exactly the same as natural diamonds. They have the same luster and hardness that even diamond examiners can't tell from the naked eye. Because there is no expensive mining, these cultivated diamonds can be sold at a lower price on the market than natural diamonds, which is very attractive to most people who want to buy diamonds. The innovation and development of technology will only make this price advantage more and more obvious.
In addition to playing the "price card", jewelers who cry out for the cultivation of diamonds are also emphasizing environmental protection and ethics. The 2006 film Blood Diamonds, starring Leonardo dicapio, brought the gore of the diamond mining industry to the screen. In some African countries plagued by civil war, the military forces force people to mine diamonds and use the profits from sales to buy military equipment. Diamonds are therefore also known as "blood diamonds" or "conflict diamonds".
And the value of diamonds has always been overhyped. De Beers, now A giant in the Diamond industry, launched the "A Diamond is Forever, a diamond that lasts Forever" marketing campaign in 1947, associating diamonds with marriage commitment. This beautiful concept caused the demand for diamonds to skyrocket, and everyone was chasing this stone. To put it plainly, the symbolic meaning of diamonds is more important in people's minds, with money and emotional value, it is true that the market share of natural diamonds is still a lot, but a recent report said that the market share of cultivated diamonds will increase exponentially in the future.
In general, cultivated diamonds and natural diamonds are not substitutes for each other, natural diamonds exist for so long, naturally there will be countless supporters. Breeding a diamond will also slowly find its own position in the development process. Throughout the history of cultivating diamonds, it can be said that it is a step by step difficult to come out, since the United States FTC recognized the status of cultivating diamonds, authoritative authentication institutions issued cultivation diamond certificates, De Beers and Pandora, Swarovski, Yu Garden Jewelry, Chow Tai Fook CAMA cultivation diamond brand and other big-name jewelers entered the cultivation diamond market, Cultivated diamonds have finally ushered in their own era, entered the consumer's vision, but also attracted countless people who want to enter the industry. Especially this year, the development of all aspects of cultivating diamonds is very fast, and I believe that cultivating diamonds will certainly walk out of a road of their own.
